Eligibility to play for a County

During any one season (September to August) a player can only represent one county in competition (this may be a different county in online competition). ECF membership (minimum bronze level for over-the-board and Supporter level for online) is required as games are ECF rated. A player must be associated with a county in one of the following ways to be eligible to play for that county:

(i) Birth in that county.

(ii) Five years’ domicile in that county at any time.

(iii) Two months’ immediate previous and present membership of a club either in or affiliated to that County.

(iv) One month’s immediately previous and present domicile in that County.

(v) Present attendance as a student at a school, college or university in that County.

When completing the next question, please note that Middlesex comprises Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Enfield, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Richmond on Thames, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, and the City of London.

To answer the next two questions, find your ECF rating (OTB, Standard) and ECF Code here:

County matches are not FIDE-rated, but your FIDE rating will help us if you have no ECF rating. To answer the next two questions, find your FIDE rating (Std.) here:

Board fee (see next question) is a voluntary payment, currently £5, which we ask county players to pay each time they play in a home match for Middlesex. These contributions enable us to field a team in each section of the SCCU County Championships. Without them, we could not currently balance the books and would need to drop one or more of our county teams. Thank you for helping Middlesex and its county players - yourself included - in this important and very practical way!
